EFFECT OF ADDITION OF STEEL FIBERS ON STRENGTH AND DURABILITY OF HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE

ABSTRACT
This paper presents an experimental investigation carried out to study the combined effect of addition of micro-silica and steel fibers on the strength and durability High performance concrete (HPC). A high performance concrete of M60 grade is considered and rapid chloride penetration tests were conducted to find the durability of HPC. Test results indicate that the addition of steel fibers to HPC increased strength and durability testing has also demonstrated the enhanced characteristics of HPC. Rapid chloride penetration results have ranged from extremely low to very low exhibits a high resistance to this form of environmental attack.

FIXED BED ADSORPTION STUDIES OF RHODAMINE B DYE USING OIL PALM EMPTY FRUITS BUNCH ACTIVATED CARBON

ABSTRACT
Global environmental pollution challenges can be alleviated if proper disposal and conversion of wastes is promoted. An attempt of converting waste to wealth was made in this study by converting oil palm empty fruits bunch to activated carbon through chemical activation with potassium hydroxide which was used for adsorption of Rhodamine B dye from waste water. Fixed-bed column adsorption system was implored in the dye removal studies. The effect of operating parameters such as influent concentration (50-200 mg/L), bed depth (5-10 cm) and solution flow rate (10-20 ml/min) on breakthrough curve was investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of oil palm empty fruit bunch activated carbon for Rhodamine B dye adsorption (69.86 mg/g) was obtained at the highest influent initial dye concentration 200 mg/L, highest bed depth 10 cm, and solution flow rate of 15 ml/min. The experimental data was modeled using Thomas model to predict the column performance and breakthrough curves. The result of the model was found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The result of the study revealed that oil palm empty fruits bunch activated carbon is a suitable adsorbent for removal of this harmful substance, Rhodamine B dye from waste waters.

PARAMETER OPTIMIZATION OF ELECTRO DISCHARGE MACHINING OF AISI D3 STEEL MATERIAL BY USING TAGUCHI METHOD

ABSTRACT
In this paper, the cutting of D3 Steel material using electro discharge machining (EDM) with a copper electrode by using Taguchi methodology has been reported. The Taguchi method is used to formulate the experimental layout, to analyse the effect of each parameter on the machining characteristics, and to predict the optimal choice for each EDM parameter such as peak current, gap voltage, duty cycle and pulse on time. It is found that these parameters have a significant influence on machining characteristic such as material removal rate (MRR), electrode wear rate (EWR), radial overcut (ROC). The analysis using Taguchi method reveals that, in general the peak current significantly affects the MRR, EWR and ROC.

STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF HIGH WORKABLE AND HIGH VOLUME FLY ASH ROLLER COMPACTED CONCRETE

ABSTRACT
This paper describes research on strength properties of high workable and very high volume fly ash Roller compacted concrete (RCC). The mixes were developed through incorporating 50 - 260kg/m3 cement and very high volumes of fly ash ranging from 40 to 85% by mass of total cementitious material. The results shown that the RCCs were more workable and easy compactable. The compaction time for the mixes was between 15-20sec only. The concretes were investigated for compressive strength, split tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, rebound hammer number and ultrasonic pulse velocity. As other properties of concrete are frequently expressed in terms of compressive strength, the properties of these very high volume RCCs were compared with compressive strength and compared with existing empirical equations for normal concrete.

BREAKTHROUGH CURVE STUDIES FOR ADSORPTION OF METHYLENE BLUE ON SBAC, SDAC AND RHAC

ABSTRACT
Adsorption is one of the most important operations carried in chemical process industries. It is generally employed for separation of the impurities or components from gas or liquid mixtures. Breakthrough curve study is important for design & scale up of packed column adsorber. The objective of the present work is packed column adsorption studies of methylene blue from dilute aqueous solution using adsorbents synthesized in laboratory from saw dust (SDAC), sugarcane baggasse (SBAC) and rice husk (RHAC) and the comparison of break through curves. The present work has successfully highlighted the efficacy and use of agricultural waste materials as adsorbent for removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution & estimated the breakthrough point, time & concentration for all the adsorbents used. It can be concluded that the loading capacities for methylene blue per gram of adsorbents SDAC, SBAC & RHAC are 0.1802, 0.1904 & 0.1434 gram respectively, thereby indicating the suitability of the adsorbents in removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions, the SBAC proving the best amongst three.

ART OF INTRA AND INTER BASIN WATER TRANSFER

ABSTRACT
The water resources in the country are limited considering the future demand. Moreover rainfall is confined to monsoon season and unevenly distributed both in space and time. At present various storages have been constructed to store water for various purposes. In case of heavy rainfall water gets spill over or in case of less rainfall there may be drought situation. Most of cases due to uneven rainfall in the basin or sub basin some storages/dams attain its maximum capacity, while some do not. On the other hand some basin has excess water available and some have deficit, while some basin/sub basin have exhausted the use of available water.
This paper represents the review of past work on the use of surface water by checking all possibilities like diversion of water from one basin/sub basin to other basin or sub basin, use of water by diverting it through available natural drain or local nallah from the catchment area of one reservoir to other, allowing spill water from dams to drains/river/local nallah by using existing canal system as a feeder canals etc. Attempts are also made to cover all methodology and techniques for water transfer in inter and intra basin.( Keywords: Interlinking of basins, Restoration , Diversion , Water availability)

INTERACTIONS OF PROCESS PARAMETERS DURING WEDM OF WC-Co COMPOSITE

ABSTRACT
Wire electro Discharge machining (WEDM) is an advanced manufacturing process widely used to manufacture complex profiles precisely on hard, difficult to machine materials. In WC-Co, Tungsten and Carbide are hard wear resistant materials; cobalt is the binder that binds them made through powder metallurgy technique. Due to composite phases: melt, evaporation temperature varies and the thermo electric nature of process makes analysis complex and stochastic. To derive best operating inputs in order to attain best output, the influential parameters and their interactions need be studied, as some variables are basically contradictory in nature. The experiments were conducted in Taguchi L32 orthogonal array, with four levels of input parameters on, cobalt percentage, on time, off time, wire feed, wire tension, ignition current and dielectric pressure. The outputs studied in this work were material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (Ra) which are important in any machining process. ANOVA table constructed and the response study indicate ignition current as the critical parameter, followed by on time, off time, dielectric pressure and wire feed respectively. The interaction plot between cobalt binder percentage and on time show definite high level interaction. This work helps gain understanding the significant machining parameters, interaction of wedm process in machining of WC-Co composite.

This paper presents a technical review of power quality improvement using facts devices associated with the renewable based distributed generation systems. For the proper selection of the facts devices the IEEE and IEC standards for grid connected renewable energy system is considered. This paper includes the integration of PV and wind energy system.
